Stoppages 2003-2007

Update: Fixed two penalty problems: Puck over glass penalty + penalty stoppage. This shows that the majority of the stoppage reduction was caused by the new offside and icing rules.

All this table displays is the number of stoppage calls per game. The Chg column compares the 2003-2004 season to the next two seasons (2005-2006 and 2006-2007). I added a "Puck Out of Play" Column that equals: "Puck in Benches" + "Puck in Crowd" + "Puck in Netting". You can see the effect of the icing rule changes as I noted last August. Other changes like the new "delay of game" penalty lowered the number of "Puck in Crowd" stoppages, but almost tripled the stoppages caused by "Pucks in Benches" (no penalty). You can see the nice benefit of touch up offsides.

How come no penalty category?

Because the NHL classifies a penalty as a "PENALTY" on the Play-By-Play and not as a "STOPPAGE".

Stupid reason, but I made this I wasn't thinking about penalties.
But here are the penalty stuff:
2003-2004: 9.28
2005-2006: 12.25
2006-2007: 10.29

If a penalty is not considered a stoppage in play aren't you underestimating the number of stoppages in play due to the puck being shot over the glass since a subset of those are considered delay of game penalties for the post lockout data?

Thanks, fixed both problems and reposted table.

Just curious, where are you getting your data from, particularly for 2004?

It's funny how, with all your analysis and stats, I'm still beating you in the Ebay hockey pool. I'd like to see the original percentages for which teams were expected to win the round, to compare with the current expectations. It's looking like Vancouver will play Anaheim. Do you really think we can beat Brian Burke's team? I'd love to start seeing some of your predictions for round 2!

Ok, that is where I get mine stats too, but I didn't realize they went back to 2004.
